Banks were particularly notorious for establishing investment trusts and using them as a waste disposal for stocks in the banks’ private portfolios that went sour. To add insult to injury, many banks encouraged the public to borrow money to invest in these trusts, and the banks extended up to 90 percent credit.
Mutual funds with the lowest overall costs will ultimately outperform the category average. With the exception of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, most index funds are less than 10 years old. As a result, there is not a lot of actual index fund performance data to look at. In certain cases I will make assumptions about the future return of index funds relative to active returns without the benefit of historic numbers (Figure 2–2). The performance of index funds may not turn out to be exactly as predicted.
It was benchmarked to the Wilshire 4500®, an index of small and medium-sized companies. Since it was not economical for Vanguard to invest in all 4500 stocks, the Extended Market Fund invested in 2000 of the largest companies in the Wilshire 4500 and another 800 small and medium-sized companies based on a statistical sample. The result was a fund that performed very close to the Wilshire 4500 with very low costs. Thus, an investor in both the Vanguard 500 Index and the Extended Market Funds had a full range of market exposure.
