We were chatting more about the trip when the phone rang. Dad’s only sister, Aunt Caryll, had died after a long struggle with cancer. At the funeral in Los Angeles, I said goodbye again to my family; this time to cousins, uncle, second-cousins, brothers, sister, mother, father and, of course, my aunt. Somehow, I felt my own parting similar to hers—a trip into the unknown that I knew I had to do. I was leaving all the security I had ever had in the real world behind: friends, family, familiar surroundings, home, my animals, my sense of belonging.

I was astounded and touched. Ours had been a relationship based on a childlike dependence on each other and need for security. The prior two years had been marked by tears, tension and depression as I struggled, unknowingly, to gain my own adult identity, rather than the identity I’d accepted through Tony’s work, his friends, his successes. My insecurity during this period of change had been reflected in my disdain for his work, habits and values, and my refusal to accept any advice or criticism from him.

But what we’d missed in breathtaking vistas the day before was made up one hundred times over that day. I felt as though I were in a glorious dream, so hard was it to accept such beauty in the real world. I was oblivious to the pain, the straining lungs, the tedium of the long grind up the grade. Every eyeful was pure magic and fantasy. Was I Alice? Or Bilbo Baggins? Or Dorothy in the Land of Oz? Only the bitter cold and biting wind that cut through our layers of clothes like a knife through an angel food cake kept me anchored in reality.
