We asked people on the street, at convenience stores, the library, or the post office where the best place was to eat—whether we wanted a full meal or an ice cream break. Invariably, we ended up off the planned route at establishments with excellent fare, where we met more colorful people and learned about the local culture. In Walla Walla, for example, we had been told not to miss the pumpkin pancakes at Clarette’s. The pancakes lived up to their reputation. Determined to be more efficient in the mornings, we managed to be on the road by nine o’clock, even after indulging in a big breakfast.

Follett’s carried the exact heavy-duty touring tires that Alice used, so I bought one and arranged to have it put on my back wheel. The air-conditioned diner we had fantasized about materialized just a short walk away, so we mingled with the Monday morning business crowd. Back at the bike shop an hour later, we thanked the mechanic and wheeled our machines out the door and into the heat.
It was a good thing only one or two cars passed so we didn’t have to disguise what we were doing for very long. Giggling, we 38 Oregon and Washington remounted our bikes, ready for the final push to Walla Walla. We decided that being able to appreciate the ridiculous was one of the requirements of successful long-distance cycling. It perked us up and diverted our attention from the rising heat as we speculated on who put the chair there and why. As we neared Walla Walla, the irrigated vineyards, orchards, and vegetable farms we had been passing gave way to huge onion fields.
