First, when institutional conflict of interest policies allow it, the university researchers who found spinoffs often make use of the laboratories where their inventions are created to conduct additional contract research that keeps the inventor involved (Wilson and Szygenda, 1991). The ability to conduct additional research is, of course, facilitated by physical proximity.
